People & Place
About the California Salmon River
The ultimate luxury, multi-sport adventure camp trip. Think comfortable, walk-in tents, gourmet riverside meals, fun and exciting whitewater, campfires under the stars, sauna, and hot showers… this trip is hard to beat! Nestled in a remote and pristine wild region in California’s northwest corner, the California Salmon River is hidden about halfway between San Francisco and Portland, Oregon. The “Cal Salmon” combines beautiful, lush coastal scenery, an intimate, marble-smooth, granite inner gorge, a seemingly endless number of waterfalls cascading from above, emerald-green waters, a very comfortable pop-up base camp with hot showers, a wood-fired sauna, and unequaled class IV-V fun whitewater.
We are thrilled to be offering these trips in partnership with Momentum River Expeditions, the best river outfitter in the area with an incredible staff of female professional guides. They are friendly, approachable, and happy to share their river skills and knowledge.
Momentum is also known for its incredible food: homemade, diverse, and served gourmet river-style! They prepare three-course meals featuring local and organic produce and products.
We have enjoyed adding extra fun touches to these experiences, such as specialty wine tastings, craft cocktails, and hands-on skills for river and wilderness settings.
Join us for some of the most classic and fun advanced whitewater in the world, comfortable nights surrounded by huge coastal mountains, time with old and new friends around the campfire, and a chance to get away from wifi, cell phone chatter, and busy everyday schedules.
MedTreks partners again with Momentum River Expeditions, known for their innovative and comfortable camping style on the river. They have built a reputation for their safari-style river trips, with walk-in tents, comfortable cots, and creative menus featuring local and organic produce and products – and for their overall friendly, professional, yet easy-going hospitality. We have run several trips with Momentum and our guests LOVE their river trips!

We set up our “pop-up” safari camp deep in the remote and rugged California Salmon River Canyon – right on the river and just above some of the country’s best class V whitewater. The camp is extremely remote, many miles from any cities, and it combines luxury camping, hot showers, a wood-fired sauna, and the Salmon River’s lush coastal forests and emerald green waters, to create an extremely unique ‘glamping’ style experience.
More about the Pop-up Safari Style Camp
With most itineraries, we meet at the camp the evening of the first day of the trip and you are taken to one of the camp’s shaded, walk-in tents. Your cozy setup includes a comfortable cot and pad with bedding, nightstand and light, and a view that is hard to beat. After getting settled in, you can take a quick shower, grab a drink at the bar (if you like), and head to our covered hangout area to meet everyone by the fire.
Each day we leave camp to explore one of the many nearby stretches of river – there are few places in the country with as many options for whitewater as there are in the spring on the Salmon. Each afternoon we head back to – or float into – our camp. What a way to arrive! If the excitement of the day’s whitewater isn’t enough, the narrow and remote roads in the area offer beautiful bike riding opportunities, and there are a number of hiking options. Or you can just relax, get into some dry clothes, play yard games (cornhole, crochet) with your family or new friends, or hang out in one of our hammocks.
Perhaps one of the most unique aspects of our camp is our wood-fired sauna trailer! Grab a towel and “blow off some steam,” to fully relax after a hard day of paddling. Or, combine the sauna with a cold plunge in the emerald green river water. Rinse off in hot showers, then walk around the trailer and grab a cocktail or some local wine at our pop-up bar.
In the late afternoon, appetizers will be served at our covered eating area and the bar, followed by one of our trademark meals featuring organic and local produce and ingredients. The evening is spent at the bar, around the campfire, or by the river. Cap off the day with a comfortable night of sleep filled only with the sounds of the river and the breeze blowing through the trees.
The combination of our unique ‘glamping’ style camp, remote and spectacular scenery, and one of the best whitewater rivers in the world, makes for an active, comfortable, and one-of-a-kind trip – all away from wifi, cell phone chatter, and regular hectic daily schedules.
Perhaps one of the most unique aspects of our camp is our wood-fired sauna trailer! Grab a towel and “blow off some steam.” You’ve earned it, after a hard day of paddling! Or, if you dare, combine the sauna with a cold plunge in the emerald green river. Rinse off in the hot showers, then walk around the trailer and grab a cocktail or some local wine at our pop-up bar. Sounds blissful.
