About the California Salmon River
The ultimate luxury, multi-sport adventure camp trip. Think comfortable, walk-in tents, gourmet riverside meals, fun and exciting whitewater, campfires under the stars, sauna, and hot showers… this trip is hard to beat! Nestled in a remote and pristine wild region in California’s northwest corner, the California Salmon River is hidden about halfway between San Francisco and Portland, Oregon. The “Cal Salmon” combines beautiful, lush coastal scenery, an intimate, marble-smooth, granite inner gorge, a seemingly endless number of waterfalls cascading from above, emerald-green waters, a very comfortable pop-up base camp with hot showers, a wood-fired sauna, and unequaled class IV-V fun whitewater.
We are thrilled to be offering these trips in partnership with Momentum River Expeditions, the best river outfitter in the area with an incredible staff of female professional guides. They are friendly, approachable, and happy to share their river skills and knowledge

4 Days 3 Nights...unforgettable experiences.
Optional Wilderness First Aid & Whitewater Skills Workshop: Meet at Ashland Springs Hotel in downtown Ashland at 7:30 a.m. We will have a brief orientation and then a fun, whitewater, and wilderness medicine skills workshop. A light lunch will be provided.
- Introduction to understanding whitewater
- Core Safety principles on the river
- Wilderness First Aid Skills for river adventures
- ***Nurses get 4 CEUs for this workshop.
For those who do not want to participate in the optional Whitewater & Wilderness First Aid workshop, our entire group will meet at Ashland Springs Hotel at 2 p.m. on May 20th. We will then travel the scenic drive to the Salmon River Camp, approximately 3.5 hours from Ashland, Oregon. We will enjoy a welcome happy hour, take time to lounge by the river, enjoy a sauna, then dinner and a bonfire under the stars. Welcome to the Salmon River Safari! (Lunch, Happy Hour, Dinner)
The first day of rafting starts with a big, relaxed breakfast served under the enormous trees of coastal California. After food and plenty of time for that second (or third) cup of coffee or tea, we all gather together for some paddling instruction. Afterwards, we’re ready to tackle the lower section of river, which is filled with big, fun class III, IV, and IV+ rapids, cascading waterfalls, and emerald-green side streams. The day will end back at our base camp with a big dinner, sauna, a campfire, plenty of time to relax, and time to talk about the next day. (Breakfast, Lunch, Happy Hour, Dinner)
The second day of rafting is a big day – get ready for some of the most incredible whitewater anywhere on the class IV Cal Salmon River. For many guides, this stretch’s combination of big-water rapids and beauty is unmatched. After catching your breath and congratulating yourself and your fellow paddlers on an amazing day, we get ready for dinner and another starlit night in the canyon. (Breakfast, Lunch, Happy Hour, Dinner)
For the third day on the water, we switch up the adventure with the opportunity to inflatable kayak the stunningly beautiful Clear Creek. Clear Creek is like no other stretch of river in the country – it’s very narrow, with high canyon walls, and the water is as clear and clean as its name implies. It is truly a place you have to see to believe. We will choose the stretch with the most ideal water level. After kayaking on Clear Creek, we say goodbye to our guides and travel back to Ashland Springs Hotel (approximately 2.5 hrs). (Breakfast, Lunch)
We set up our “pop-up” safari camp deep in the remote and rugged California Salmon River Canyon – right on the river and just above some of the country’s best class V whitewater. The camp is extremely remote, many miles from any cities, and it combines luxury camping, hot showers, a wood-fired sauna, and the Salmon River’s lush coastal forests and emerald green waters, to create an extremely unique ‘glamping’ style experience.
More about the Pop-up Safari Style Camp
With most itineraries, we meet at the camp the evening of the first day of the trip and you are taken to one of the camp’s shaded, walk-in tents. Your cozy setup includes a comfortable cot and pad with bedding, nightstand and light, and a view that is hard to beat. After getting settled in, you can take a quick shower, grab a drink at the bar (if you like), and head to our covered hangout area to meet everyone by the fire.
Each day we leave camp to explore one of the many nearby stretches of river – there are few places in the country with as many options for whitewater as there are in the spring on the Salmon. Each afternoon we head back to – or float into – our camp. What a way to arrive! If the excitement of the day’s whitewater isn’t enough, the narrow and remote roads in the area offer beautiful bike riding opportunities, and there are a number of hiking options. Or you can just relax, get into some dry clothes, play yard games (cornhole, crochet) with your family or new friends, or hang out in one of our hammocks.
Perhaps one of the most unique aspects of our camp is our wood-fired sauna trailer! Grab a towel and “blow off some steam,” to fully relax after a hard day of paddling. Or, combine the sauna with a cold plunge in the emerald green river water. Rinse off in hot showers, then walk around the trailer and grab a cocktail or some local wine at our pop-up bar.
In the late afternoon, appetizers will be served at our covered eating area and the bar, followed by one of our trademark meals featuring organic and local produce and ingredients. The evening is spent at the bar, around the campfire, or by the river. Cap off the day with a comfortable night of sleep filled only with the sounds of the river and the breeze blowing through the trees.
The combination of our unique ‘glamping’ style camp, remote and spectacular scenery, and one of the best whitewater rivers in the world, makes for an active, comfortable, and one-of-a-kind trip – all away from wifi, cell phone chatter, and regular hectic daily schedules.
Perhaps one of the most unique aspects of our camp is our wood-fired sauna trailer! Grab a towel and “blow off some steam.” You’ve earned it, after a hard day of paddling! Or, if you dare, combine the sauna with a cold plunge in the emerald green river. Rinse off in the hot showers, then walk around the trailer and grab a cocktail or some local wine at our pop-up bar. Sounds blissful.
