Shasta Winter Backcountry Skills Course

Join us for a winter backcountry skills course in the charming town of Mt. Shasta! Spend the weekend learning how to stay safe and prepared during winter snow sports. Learn from experts in the field on topics of mountain medicine, avalanche safety, backcountry navigation and winter wilderness first aid. 

This course is designed for anyone who ventures out into the wilderness, whether on skis, boards, bikes, ATVs or by foot. 


  • Spend the weekend in the charming mountain town of Mt. Shasta, California

Winter Skills Course Itinerary

January 6th-8th, 2022

Friday January 6th

Arrive at 3pm and check in to your cozy mountain lodge. Meet the MedTreks team at 4pm on the conference room for a welcome reception and part 1 of the winter back country skills course. Topics will include avalanche safety, back country gear and the foundation of winter navigation. Evening is free to relax in the famous sauna trailer or sit outside by the campfire getting to know new friends.

Welcome Dinner & Happy Hour Included 

Saturday January 7th: 

After breakfast there will be 2-3 hrs of morning lecture for part two of the winter skills course. In the late morning we will head out to one of the beautiful backcountry areas around Mt. Shasta to tour and practice winter navigation and terrain identification skills.

In the afternoon we will return to our cozy lodge for happy hour debrief and optional sauna.

Sunday January 8th, 2023: 

Today will be our final day and part 3 of the winter skills course. We will have a short lecture after breakfast reviewing the material from the weekend and then head out for another snow adventure on Mt. Shasta to practice and learn more backcountry skills.

The day will conclude around 4pm back at our lodge in Shasta.

Welcome to Loge Camp Mt. Shasta!

Our home for the weekend is the cozy Loge Camp in downtown Mt. Shasta. Located just a few blocks from the restaurants and shops, the Loge also offers an onsite cafe, gear rentals and outdoor fire pits for evening hang-outs under the stars. This will also be the meeting space for all of our indoor lectures prior to going out on the mountain each day.
