TRIP DETAILS

9 Day Peru Mountain Medicine & Cultural Tour

Exploring Machu Picchu & The Heart of the Sacred Valley

One of our favorite places in the world, this trip combines it all: delicious food, incredible hikes, and luxury lodges.

This trip is a 9-day cultural and hiking tour of the Sacred Valley of Peru and Machu Picchu combines wilderness and travel medicine education that is  paired with a hands-on immersive experience working with a local healthcare program of Peru, Sacred Valley Health, who are doing incredible work with the indigenous cultures of the highlands of Peru. The idea is to help expand the scope of the public health services that this program provides, but also to equip MedTreks participants to feel more confident in their skills and strategies when they do global health work abroad in other regions.

PEOPLE & PLACE

The Sacred Valley

Most people who research traveling to Peru know the Sacred Valley as the entryway into Machu Picchu. Many travel itineraries pass directly through this incredible valley on a hasty mission to see Machu Picchu. But there are so many incredible gems in this valley that we believe it is important to spend at least three days exploring the ancient sites and fascinating villages and witnessing the vivid expression of Andean culture. After running several trips to Peru, we have carefully selected our favorite hikes, markets, restaurants, and local tours that we feel provide a richly authentic Peruvian experience.

Peru Trip Highlights

Mountain Medicine & Cultural Tour

Pisac Market

Known for its woven textiles, the Pisac Market, which historically was the gathering place for all the artisans to buy, sell and exchange their products, is still thriving seven days a week and is one of the most famous handicraft markets in all of Latin America. You can spend hours getting lost in the narrow cobblestoned streets lined with small handicraft shops.

Hacienda Sarampampa

A true culinary treasure hidden in the Sacred Valley, this quaint hacienda provides our groups with an educational and authentic five-course farm-to-table experience. This is also an opportunity to learn about the Giant White Corn variety and how this unique crop has influenced the Andeans and the economy of the Sacred Valley of the Incas and its farmers.

Salt Fields of Maras

The salt fields of Maras are incredible, with over 3,000 pools. Each pool comes from a single water source that has supplied the Southern Highlands for thousands of years. Witness the different steps of salt harvesting, from prepping the salt beds to extracting the white mineral by a wooden paddle, an ancient technique still used to this day.

Chinchero

Chinchero is a small, authentic Andean village perched at 12,000 feet, known for its commitment to preserving Inca customs. Quechua-speaking locals wear traditional dresses and a vibrant handicraft market takes place several days a week. Visiting the Centro de Textiles Tradicionales allows you to participate in the weaving demonstrations, learning firsthand how weavers turn alpaca and sheep wool into fine textiles.
Machu Picchu

The legendary ‘Lost City’ is without a doubt one of the world’s most impressive archaeological sites. Built by the Incas on the summit of “Machu Picchu” (Old Peak), overlooking the deep canyon of the Urubamba river in a semi-tropical area 120 kilometres (75 miles) from the city of Cusco, the Lost City sits on a mountain site of extraordinary beauty, in the middle of a tropical mountain forest. Machu Picchu was the most amazing urban creation of the Inca Empire at its height, with its giant walls, terraces, and ramps, appearing as though they have been cut naturally in the continuous rock escarpments.
