About the Global Health & Mountain Medical Field Seminar

This year, MedTreks is collaborating with Sacred Valley Health in Peru, a non-profic, global health organization doing incredible work with the indigenous cultures in the highlands of Peru. Using a model that MedTreks aligns with, known as Train-The-Trainer, this organization specifically focuses on training community health workers or “Prometoras” to help improve the health of the communities living in the high mountain villages.

We have created a collaborative seminar with them combinging Medical Spanish Review, Global Health & Mountain Medicine lectures mixed in with hands on Wilderness Medicine skills workshops. There will also be a healthcare outreach event held in the higher mountain region where MedTreks will help conduct a health campaign.

Working side-by-side the local “Promotoras” or community health workers, our MedTreks teams will have an authentic service learning experience-sharing knowledge and collaborating in the global health arena.

About Sacred Valley Health

Improving Health through Education, Access, and Empowerment

Sacred Valley Health was formed in early 2012 to improve health care access and equity in Peru’s Sacred Valley. With a dedicated staff and a team of volunteers, we recruit, train, and support community health workers (promotoras de salud) who work in their home communities.

The Need.

The remote indigenous communities of the Ollantaytambo District are medically underserved for a variety of reasons. Rural communities lack access to primary medical care as a result of geographic isolation, poor road conditions, and irregular transportation. Poor socioeconomic conditions, malnutrition, lack of basic services, and poor education further worsen health outcomes.

The mission of Sacred Valley Health is to promote health in underserved rural communities of Peru’s Sacred Valley though our pillars of work: Access, Education, and Empowerment.
